Marc Priewe: Native American LiteratureThis lecture provides an introduction to Native American literature from its oral beginnings
to its printed present. As a case study, Leslie Marmon Silko's novel Ceremony (1977) will help to
illuminate salient themes, symbols, structures, and narrative strategies in contemporary American
Indian fiction.

Hofstätter: “Westward Ho”This lecture outlines the main events and ideologies underlying the westward expansion of the
United States during the nineteenth century. It will illustrate some of the lived experiences at
the "American frontier" and provide a necessary critique of U.S. imperialism and internal
colonialism.
